Dubai Creek

The Dubai Road and Traffic Authority (RTA) has added two new routes to public transport in Dubai Creek's waterway network. The two new waterlines use modern wooden boats powered by electric motors - so-called Abras. Above all, they should facilitate visitors' access to the textile and spice markets and the Dubai Museum.

The two new berths Al Sabkha in Deira and Al Fahidi in Bur Dubai complement existing stations Al Seef, Baniyas, Dubai Old Souq and Al Ghubaiba.

The Abra Al Fahidi and Al Sabkha stations connect the interesting and worth seeing tourist attractions on Dubai Creek: the Dubai Museum and the Textile Souk in Bur Dubai as well as the Spice , Gold and Perfume Souk in Deira.

In order to shorten the waiting time of the passengers at the individual stations, seven instead of four abrasives will be used in the future. For example, the waiting time on existing Abra routes Al Seef and Baniyas is reduced from 30 minutes to eleven minutes. In the future, however, passengers will not only save time, they will also reduce their ecological footprint. The new boats are equipped with a 20 kilowatt electric motor and have 26 lead crystal batteries with solar panels and a standby generator. Thus, the "hybrid Abra" causes 87 percent less pollutant emissions than a gasoline-powered Abra. In addition, the environmentally friendly abrasives feature an automated fire extinguishing system as well as a ventilation and cooling system with USB charging ports for ultimate comfort and safety.

Despite modern technology and new drive system, the boats retain their authentic design and the features of a traditional Abra. The crossing also remains cheap, quick and easy: for two dirhams (about 50 cents), passengers can cross the natural inlet in Dubai. It pays directly to the captain on the Abra itself. Whether you want to quickly cross the Dubai Creek or visit one of the attractive sights along the Dubai Creek, a ride on the traditional Abras is always worthwhile.
